When do we choose a Bar/Bat Mitzvah date?
Chabad will typically send parents of Hebrew School students a Bar/Bat Mitzvah packet
in 4th grade for those parents who would like to get a head start. There is no pressure
to choose a date right then, though we recommend that we finalize one at least a year
before their Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
In Jewish tradition, a girl turns Bat Mitzvah at the age of 12. A boy turns Bar Mitzvah at
the age of 13. The service could be on their Hebrew calendar birthday or any day
thereafter. (Please click here to calculate your child’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah birthday.)
Preparations
Approximately 8-12 months before their Bar/Bat Mitzvah, in addition to Hebrew School,
your child will be privately tutored for their unique service. During that period parents will
stay in touch with Rabbi Arik to chart their progress.
1-2 months before the big day, each family will meet with Rabbi Arik to discuss the
service and the best way to include and honor family members.
